Assessment Engine

Finds exactly where each student stands, skill by skill, in about 30 minutes.

What makes it work

  • Adaptive

Every answer chooses the next question, so each student gets a different set of questions, pitched to them.

  • Reads the skill tree

A right answer counts the skills beneath it as known. That's why it needs a few questions per area, where a fixed test would need about 100.

  • About 30 minutes, in class time

It can be split across a week of short sessions.

  • Low stakes by design

No marks shown and no pass or fail during the check, so students answer honestly and nerves don't skew the result.

  • The same scale every time

Run it again mid-term and end of term to measure growth against the start. It also runs mock exams in the real exam's format.

  • AI-built question banks

Large banks of questions for every skill, written with AI and checked by subject experts, so no two students see the same check.

What it looks like

Every student gets different questions

Each student starts in the middle of each area. A right answer moves them up a level and counts every skill beneath it as known. A wrong answer moves them down. Within a few questions, the check closes in on where each student is.

A demonstration of the starting-point check. On the left, a student answers on their phone, one question at a time, and is never told whether an answer is right. On the right is what we know so far: each answer is placed on a grid of areas and levels. Each area starts at level 4. A right answer moves up a level and counts every level below it as known without asking; a wrong answer moves down a level. Student A answers 8 questions and is placed in Number at level 6, Fractions and percent at level 3, Algebra at level 4. Student B starts in the same place, gets different questions because their answers differ, and is placed after 9 questions in Number at level 3, Fractions and percent at level 6, Algebra at level 2. A fixed test of the full check would need about 100 questions, the same for every student.

Algebra placed. Student A is placed in 8 questions.

A report on the whole cohort

When the check closes, staff see where the cohort stands topic by topic, how many students are missing fundamentals, and the practice it needs.

Example

The growth by the end of term

Run the check again at the end of term, on the same scale. It shows how far each student and the whole cohort moved from week 1, skill by skill.
